Vinyl Construction

2 Ways Vinyl is Produced:

  • Vinyl FlooringRotogravure - Rotogravure is the newer and more common method for residential vinyl production. To produce, the core layer or gel coat, passes below a spinning cylinder. The cylinder then prints the pattern on with different colored inks. Once the print dyes are set, a clear wear layer is then applied to the surface.
  • Inlaid - Inlaid vinyl uses solid color vinyl chips in production. These chips are bonded together with heat and pressure. A clear wear laer is applied to the surface of the vinyl chips. This process normally creates geometric-looking patterns.

The top layer, wear layer, is critical to the performance of your vinyl floor. This layer is measured in mils. Each mil is about the thickness of a telephone book page and varies with each collection/series. As you move up in a line, you will notice the thickness of the wear layer increases.
