Hardwood Construction

Hardwood FlooringWood flooring has advanced considerably in the past years. You now have the ability to have hardwood flooring in every room of your home including baths and kitchens. You also have more choices when it comes to styles, colors and finishes. With all these choices available, it helps to be informed!

All hardwood flooring that is constructed of a single piece of wood, regardless of length or width, is considered to be a solid flooring. There are more choices when dealing with solid flooring. Some of these are species of wood, finish types, and satin. All of these factors add the personalization of your floor.

Job-Site Finished or Prefinished?

When dealing with hardwood, you choose a finish that is applied on site or a factory prefinished floor.

Job-Site Finished
As the name implies, a job-site finish is one that is applied at the place of installation. This option leaves you more choices when deciding on stain/finish. A finish is applied to the floor and determines the type of shine you receive from the floor as well as color. A wide variety of stains are available leaving your options unlimited for customizing your floor's color. Sanding and finishing on-site does, however, have a few drawbacks. The sanding and finishing of the floor does create dust and noise from the equipment and there is a dry time during which you will not be able to use the room.

Prefinished
Witha prefinished floor, the finish is applied at the factory. Several finishes are available, including ultraviolet cured urethane, water-based urethane, moisture-cured urethane and seal and wax. With prefinished flooring, you eliminate the dust and noise, although you limit your choices for stain and finishing options.
